FASTag Exemption: Understanding the Policies and Processes
10 December, 2024
Synopsis
- FASTag, using RFID, enables smooth toll payments, with certain vehicles exempted.
- Exemptions cover emergency vehicles, individuals with physical disability and more.
- Apply for FASTag exemption online via the NHAI website with required documents.
Gone are the days when the queue at toll plazas seemed never-ending. Because to end this, the government of India has introduced and implemented FASTag. Not only has FASTag revolutionised the collection of tolls in India, but it also offers a quick, smooth and seamless experience for the public. While it is now mandatory for every vehicle owner (private, individual or public transport) to have a FASTag, not all vehicles must pay the toll. Keep reading on to learn what FASTag is, how it works, who is exempted from toll tax and why, how to apply for the toll exemption list and the list of exempted vehicles on toll plaza.
FASTag: What is It?
Simply put, FASTag is a digital or electronic medium of toll collection system in India. It has been implemented by the NHAI or the National Highways Authority of India. The process involves using Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) for paying tolls directly via UPI or bank accounts and payment wallets linked with FASTag. FASTag is affixed to your car's windscreen. This enables you and other drivers to pass through toll plazas smoothly without stopping to pay tolls in cash.
FASTag Exemption: Who Are Exempted From Toll Tax?
The rules for toll payments are set by the NHAI. Per the rules, the taxes are imposed on all individuals equally for using the roads. However, there is a toll tax exemption list permitting vehicles and individuals of certain categories to be exempted from paying the toll. Let us look at these categories that are on the toll exemption list:
All emergency vehicles like fire brigade trucks, ambulances, funeral vans and similar vehicles on emergency duty are exempted vehicles on toll plaza.
Vehicles of defence personnel, army trucks, cars and other vehicles directly belonging to the Defence Department of India are also exempted.
VIP vehicles with important individuals and the cars accompanying them as their entourage are on the FASTag exemption list. These include vehicles with the following passengers:
The Prime Minister of India
The President of India
Chief Ministers, Members of the Parliament
Governor of any State
Chief Justice of India
Union Ministers
Central and State armed forces on duty, para-military forces
Police
Supreme Court Judges
High Court Judges
Executive Magistrates, etc.
Vehicles for public transport such as state and interstate buses are also exempted from paying toll tax as per NHAI rules.
Vehicles in use for official duty by the Ministry of Defence and NHAI officials on duty
Mechanical vehicles specially made for individuals with physical disability
Note that per the National Highways Fee (Determination of rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, exemption is applicable only when the vehicle is used for official use. For instance, a serving army personnel using a private vehicle for commute is required to pay the toll.
How to Apply for FASTag Exemption?
FASTag exemption is awarded to vehicle owners who are eligible for this status. To attain exempted FASTag, apply online. NHAI exempted FASTag status is given as per a systematic application process online:
Go to the Official NHAI FASTag Website https://fastag.ihmcl.com/#
