27 August, 2024

Synopsis

  • FASTag helps streamline toll payments and reduce congestion.

  • It is important to stay updated with NPCI’s new rules for FASTag for a smooth journey.

  • Some new FASTag guidelines are – linking of vehicle registration number, linking your phone, and penalty for not using FASTag.

Typically, most people have no issues paying tolls if it means smooth, fast roads that take them to their destinations quickly. What they do mind is waiting in line to pay. In 2016, the government introduced FASTag, which are fixed on vehicle windscreens that allow you to zip through dedicated lanes at toll plazas without stopping. The vehicles are identified using Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) and charges are deducted from the prepaid wallet or Savings account linked to the FASTag.

FASTag has significantly transformed the way we travel on highways. Implemented to streamline toll payments and reduce congestion, FASTag automatically deducts toll charges from the linked prepaid wallet or Savings Account. While the convenience of this system is undeniable, it is essential to be aware of certain rules to ensure smooth and hassle-free journeys. Here are new FASTag rules that every user must know, helping you navigate the highways efficiently and avoid any potential issues or penalties.

FASTag new rules have been introduced, of which all travellers who use these toll roads need to be aware. Let’s take a look.

New FASTag Rules 2024

The new rules for FASTag in 2024 introduce several important requirements to enhance the efficiency, compliance, and user experience of the electronic toll collection system. Here are the new rules:

1. ‘One Vehicle, One Tag’ [OVOT]

As per OVOT mandate, you may no longer have more than one active FASTag linked to your vehicle. In case you have an active tag on your vehicle number, and you apply for another tag, your previous FASTag will be closed. To retain the previous tag, you must contact the issuing bank of your existing FASTag. You can check the complete details of all the FASTags’ issued on your vehicle here.

2. Incorrect / Invalid Vehicle Number

Each FASTag must be linked with the correct vehicle registration number as per the Registration Certificate (RC) issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). If your FASTag is issued with an incorrect vehicle number, you can get it corrected by raising a service request for a Vehicle Number update by following the below steps:

  • Login to HDFC Bank FASTag Customer Portal.

  • Click on the Service Request tab and under “Make Service Request” select Request Type as “UPDATE VEHICLE REG NO.”.

  • Select the Chassis / Vehicle No. on which VRN No. needs to be updated.

  • Enter the vehicle number, upload the RC copy (mandatory), validate the request via OTP and submit.

3. Update Vehicle Registration Number against Chassis No [VIN to VRN]:

If the vehicle registration number is not updated within 90 days from the date of FASTag issuance, your HDFC Bank FASTag will be closed due to non-compliance as per NPCI guidelines.

Each FASTag must be linked with the unique combination of vehicle registration number and chassis number. For new vehicles where the registration number is not yet available, FASTag is issued on the chassis number.

To update the Vehicle Registration Number, please raise a service request on HDFC Bank Customer Portal by following the below steps,

  • Login to HDFC Bank FASTag Customer Portal.
