What is IMPS?

IMPS is an interbank electronic funds transfer system in India, managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It enables individuals to instantly send and receive money using their mobile phones or internet banking. This system is pivotal in facilitating real-time transactions, allowing users to transfer funds with both convenience and security. With IMPS, individuals have the flexibility to make payments, settle bills, send money to friends and family, and execute various financial transactions both swiftly and efficiently.

Types of IMPS Transfers

Before we dive into the process of IMPS transfers, understand that IMPS can be broadly categorised into two types:

  1. IMPS via Mobile Number and MMID

You can send money to a beneficiary using their mobile number and MMID. MMID stands for Mobile Money Identifier. It is a seven-digit code linked to a unique mobile number. You can ask your bank to provide the MMID. Similarly, your beneficiary can request their bank for their MMID and share it with you so that you can make the transfer. Note that for making IMPS using MMID, both you and your beneficiary must register their mobile number with the respective bank.

  2. IMPS via Account Number and Indian Financial System Code (IFSC)

You can use the beneficiary’s account details, i.e., their bank account number, Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) and bank name and branch to send money using IMPS. This method is viable if the beneficiary has not registered their mobile number with their bank account.

How to Transfer Money Via IMPS?

Here are different ways you can transfer money using NPCI’s Immediate Payment Service:

  1. Log into your bank’s Mobile Banking or NetBanking platform.

  4. Select the beneficiary’s MMID or Account Number.

  5. Enter the amount.

  6. Use the MPIN or transaction password to authenticate the transaction.

  • Via ATMs

  1. Visit your bank’s ATM and locate the IMPS fund transfer option on the ATM screen.

  2. Enter the beneficiary’s mobile number and MMID and the transfer amount.

  3. Authenticate the transaction using your Debit Card and ATM PIN.

  • Via SMS

Some banks may allow you to send money via text message. Write a text message in the format provided by your bank and send it to the number provided by the bank. Typically, for SMS IMPS transfers, you will need the beneficiary’s MMID.
