However, you need to understand the cancellation and refund policies. Let’s find out how much refund on cancellation of train ticket can you get in this article.
How Much Money Is Deducted On Cancellation Of Train Ticket?
The money deducted on cancellation of train ticket, and the refund amount you can get depends on several factors, including the class of travel, the timing of the cancellation, and the type of ticket. Here is a general overview of the cancellation charges as per the ticket type:
Regular Tickets
According to IRCTC, the cancellation charges for a confirmed ticket cancelled more than 48 hours before the train’s scheduled departure are:
AC First Class/Executive Class: ₹240 + GST
AC 2 Tier/First Class: ₹200 + GST
AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy: ₹180 + GST
Sleeper Class: ₹120
Second Class: ₹60
For cancellations done from 48 hours for up to 12 hours from the listed departure time, 25% of the total fare is deducted as cancellation charges.
Cancellations made within 12 hours of the listed time of departure or after the departure of the train result in a deduction of 50% of the fare.
Tatkal Tickets
Confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable, but they can be cancelled. The cancellation charge for a Tatkal Waitlisted ticket is ₹60 for 3AC and ₹65 per person for 2AC, plus a convenience fee of ₹35 and a 2% transaction charge is levied. This means you stand to lose around ₹100 - ₹200 depending on the ticket fare and travel distance.
Waitlisted Tickets
If you cancel a waitlisted ticket online up to four hours before the train’s scheduled departure, you will receive the full refund, but a nominal cancellation charge of ₹20+ GST (per passenger) will be levied. If you cancel 30 minutes before the train’s departure, you will pay a charge of ₹60 + GST per passenger.
You can cancel waitlisted tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters or on the IRCTC website or its affiliate mobile apps like PayZapp. If all passengers on a ticket remain on the waiting list after the first charting, the system will automatically cancel the tickets and refund the full amount, without any cancellation.
