- How to do IRCTC Train Ticket Cancellation and Get Refund
How to do IRCTC Train Ticket Cancellation and Get Refund
21 February, 2024
Synopsis
IRCTC has streamlined train travel by offering easy online booking of railway tickets.
Passengers can manage their travel plans through the IRCTC website or mobile app, with clear guidelines on cancellation charges and policies for different types of tickets.
IRCTC has also made it simple and straightforward to cancel an IRCTC ticket.
Planning a train journey in India, especially during the peak holiday season, necessitates advance preparations. Thanks to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), booking train tickets has become a straightforward and convenient process. Initially, users are required to create an account on the IRCTC website, a one-time effort that paves the way for hassle-free future bookings. This digital leap not only facilitates ease of access but also significantly cuts down the time traditionally spent in queues. The IRCTC platform supports a variety of online payment methods, ensuring a smooth transaction experience for travellers. In this article, you can get information on how to cancel a ticket in IRCTC.
Cancelling IRCTC Train Ticket
In today’s fast-paced world, the IRCTC has adapted to offer more than just booking services; it provides equally efficient IRCTC booking cancellation options. Whether through the IRCTC website or its user-friendly mobile app, you can manage your bookings with ease. However, it is crucial for users to understand the different IRCTC cancellation charges and policies that apply to confirmed, waitlisted, and Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets, across both sleeper and air-conditioned classes. Being informed about these details not only aids in making better travel decisions but also helps in avoiding any last-minute hassles or unexpected costs.
How to Cancel a Ticket in IRCTC?
If you want to cancel a ticket in IRCTC, follow these steps:
Visit the official Indian Railways website.
Login using your username and password.
Go to ‘My Transactions’ > ‘Booked Ticket History’.
Here, select the ticket you wish to cancel by choosing the specific passengers and select ‘Cancel Ticket’.
A confirmation pop up will be displayed, click on ‘OK’ to confirm the cancellation request.
Following this, your cancellation will be confirmed online, and the refund will be credited back to the account you used for booking.
In scenarios where an e-ticket for a group or family includes passengers with confirmed reservations and others on RAC or the waiting list, a full refund of the fare, minus a clerkage fee, is permissible for even the confirmed passengers. This is subject to the condition that the IRCTC ticket cancellation is done online, or an online TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) is filed for all passengers at least 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure.
To file a TDR online:
Login to your IRCTC account.
Go to ‘Booked Ticket History’ under ‘My Transactions’.
Select the PNR for which TDR needs to be filed.
Provide passenger details and the reason to file TDR.
IRCTC will then forward the claim to the concerned railways for refund processing. The refund is usually credited back within five days to the account used for booking. For counter tickets, TDR can be filed online, but the refund must be collected from the reservation counter.
For e-Tickets booked under the Tatkal scheme: No refund is granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges are deducted as per existing Railway rules. Partial cancellation is permitted for Tatkal e-tickets.
Cancellation of e-tickets in case of train cancellations: If a train is marked as 'CANCELLED' in PRS due to unforeseen events like floods or accidents, a full refund is granted if the ticket is cancelled within three days of the train's scheduled departure. This cancellation can be done online by the customer.

IRCTC Cancellation Charges
If unused reserved tickets are cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure, then these are the IRCTC cancellation charges:
AC First Class/Executive Class: ₹240 + GST.
AC 2 Tier/First Class: ₹200 + GST.
AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy: ₹180 + GST.
Sleeper Class: ₹120.
Second Class: ₹60.
Important Things to Remember
Here’s what you need to keep in mind when cancelling your IRCTC tickets:
E-ticket cancellations must be done online, not at railway counters.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before departure, 25% of the base fare plus GST for all AC classes is deducted, excluding service and transaction charges.
Cancellations less than 12 hours and up to 4 hours before departure result in a 50% deduction of the base fare plus GST for all AC classes.
E-tickets cannot be cancelled after chart preparation, but a TDR can be filed. TDRs can now be filed conveniently for instant refunds.
No refunds are admissible for tickets not cancelled or TDRs not filed up to 4 hours before departure.
For RAC/waitlisted tickets, a fee of ₹60 per passenger is deducted, in addition to service and transaction charges. No refunds are provided for confirmed Tatkal ticket cancellations.
