What is a PAN Card?
In India, a Permanent Account Number or PAN card is one of the most vital documents you need to have. Serving as a widely-accepted ID and address proof document, PAN comprises a unique code of 10 letters and numerals, e.g. ABCDE1234F, which helps identity you as an individual drawing income or a tax-paying citizen. Your PAN helps the Income Tax department verify your financial activities and check if you are complying with your tax liabilities.
How To Get a Pan Card?
To get a PAN card, you need to send an application. You may send your PAN card applications offline or online. While you can apply offline by visiting your local PAN centre or through agents, you may need to pay an administrative/service fee if you choose the offline route. Alternatively, you can apply for your PAN card online directly through the NDSL/UTIITSL website. Based on your citizenship status, you must fill Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (for foreign nationals) to get your PAN Card.
How to Apply for a PAN card Offline?
If you prefer the traditional route, you can apply for a PAN card offline with the following steps:
Visit the NSDL e-Gov website and download 'Form 49A'.
Fill out the application form with all of the required information, attach a passport-size photograph and sign the application.
Submit the completed form, along with the necessary documentation, at the local PAN centre or to your agent providing the PAN application service.
Pay the applicable charges for the PAN card, including the PAN issuing charge and the administrative/service fee.
After submitting your application, you will be given an acknowledgment number that you may use to track the status of your PAN card application.
Upon receiving your application the NSDL/UTIITSL department typically issues your PAN card within 15 days.

Online PAN card applications can be submitted through the NSDL and UTIITSL websites. Both have been authorised by the Government of India for issuing PANs on the Income Tax Department's behalf.
