HDFC Bank Parivartan Restores Check Dam in Bhakura, Chhattisgarh

Raipur, November 6, 2023: HDFC Bank, through its CSR brand Parivartan, has successfully restored a check dam in Bhakura village, situated in the Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh. The check dam restoration was done in partnership with the Ambuja Cement Foundation. This endeavor has helped revive the livelihoods of families who depend on farming as their primary source of income.

The check dam had fallen into disrepair, causing great hardship to the local farming community. The malfunctioning structure severely impeded agricultural operations, affecting the livelihoods of the families who relied on it.

This restoration project was initiated as part of the Holistic Rural Development Project (HRDP), a collaborative effort between HDFC Bank Parivartan and the Ambuja Cement Foundation. The project, active in 10 villages of Surguja District in Chhattisgarh, began its work in Bhakura village in December 2020.

The revitalisation of the check dam has expanded the catchment area, increasing its water storage capacity to 8000 cubic meters. The check dam is now functioning efficiently, irrigating 52 acres of land and enabling the cultivation of paddy and various vegetables, including ladyfinger, tomato, and chili. With water available year-round, the catchment area has significantly boosted the income of the local farmers. The farmers can now cultivate during both the Rabi and Kharif seasons, leading to an overall improvement in their standard of living.
