- What is a Self Cheque and How to Write it
What is a Self-Cheque & How to Write it?
10 June, 2024
Synopsis
A self-cheque can help you transfer funds from one of your accounts to another.
You can also use a self-cheque to withdraw cash from your own account.
You must know the correct cheque-writing procedures whether you are withdrawing cash or transferring money between your accounts.
Nowadays in online transactions and digital payments, one must know how to write a self-cheque as it is vital. Whether you are transferring funds between your own accounts or withdrawing cash, a self-cheque serves as a tangible record of the transaction. In this article, we take you through the process of how to write a cheque for self. Read on.
What Is A Self Cheque?
A self-cheque is a cheque written by an account holder to themselves. It enables you to withdraw or transfer funds from one account under your name to another.
Step-by-Step Guide to Writing a Self-Cheque
Ensure you have the correct cheque book associated with the account you wish to withdraw from or transfer funds between. Here are the steps on how to fill a self-cheque to withdraw money:
Begin by dating the cheque. Write the current date on the designated line in the format DD/MM/YYYY. This ensures that the cheque is valid only for a certain period, typically three months from the date mentioned.
In the ‘Pay’ or ‘Pay to the Order of’ field, write your name as it appears on your bank account. This indicates that the funds are to be paid to you, the account holder.
In the box provided next to the ‘₹’ symbol, write the amount you wish to withdraw or transfer, in figures. Be precise and ensure the amount is accurate to avoid discrepancies.
Below the payee’s name, write the same amount in words. For example, if you have written ‘₹1,00,000’ in figures, write ‘One Lakh Rupees Only’ in words. This acts as a double security measure to prevent alterations.
Put your signature on the bottom right-hand corner of the cheque. Use the signature consistent with your bank records. Your signature validates the cheque and authorises the bank to process the transaction.
Note: When you write a self-cheque, you have two options – you can either withdraw the money in cash or transfer it into another account you hold. If you choose the latter, you need to draw two parallel lines on the top-left corner of the cheque and write the words A/C Payee between those lines. You must then deposit this cheque in the designated bank along with a duly-filled deposit slip.
Precautions and Tips For Writing A Self Cheque
Keep these points in mind while writing a self-cheque:
Use a pen with indelible ink to prevent tampering or alterations to the cheque.
Treat cheques like cash and store them in a safe and secure location. Avoid leaving blank cheques lying around to prevent misuse.
Before signing the cheque, double-check all details, including the date, payee name, and amount, to ensure accuracy.
If you have unused cheques from an old cheque book, remember to void them by drawing diagonal lines across the cheque and writing ‘VOID’ across it. This prevents unauthorised use of old cheques.
Keep track of all cheque transactions in the index section in the cheque book to detect any discrepancies or unauthorised withdrawals.
