- What is a Debit Card PIN and Where to Find It
What is a Debit Card PIN and Where to Find It
02 May, 2024
Synopsis
A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is necessary to authenticate Debit Card payments.
You can set up a PIN for your Debit Card via NetBanking, Mobile Banking or ATM.
A Debit Card allows you to use your bank account funds to pay for various online and offline expenses. A Debit Card PIN lets you authenticate these payments. Earlier, along with the Debit Card, the bank would send the Debit Card PIN in a sealed paper, with instructions to activate the Debit Card. Today, you can activate your Debit Card and set the PIN online. Information on Debit Card PIN is available below.
What is a PIN Number in a Debit Card?
A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a unique series of numbers associated with the security of your accounts. When it comes to your bank account and Debit Card, you need to provide your Debit Card PIN to make payments online, in stores and withdraw money from ATMs.
Typically, a Debit Card PIN is four digits long. A PIN is a password to your account so you must choose a PIN that is difficult to guess but easy for you to remember.
How Do I Find My Debit Card PIN Number
If you have received a welcome kit from your bank after opening a Savings Account, you may receive an enclosed Debit Card PIN set by the bank. You can use this PIN to activate your Debit Card and set a preferred PIN. However, now you can set your Debit Card PIN online.
Ways to Generate Debit Card PIN
The following are the different methods to set a Debit Card PIN:
Online Banking Channels
Banks typically provide NetBanking and Mobile Banking facilities that allow you to bank from anywhere, at any time. To set a PIN via these channels, you can follow these steps:
Log into the bank’s NetBanking or Mobile Banking portal.
Navigate to the Debit Card section.
Go to Debit Card settings and select the option to set Debit Card PIN.
Select your account and linked Debit Card. This is applicable when you hold multiple accounts with the bank, for instance, a Savings Account for your personal needs and Current Account for your business expenses.
Enter and re-enter the new Debit Card PIN and confirm.
You may have to verify the PIN generation via mobile-based one time password (OTP). For this, your mobile number must be linked to your bank account.
ATM
Another convenient way to set Debit Card PIN is via an ATM.
You can visit your nearest bank’s ATM, insert the Debit Card in the ATM slot and select the option to set PIN.
Verify yourself by entering the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with the account.
Enter and re-enter the new Debit Card PIN and confirm.
If you’ve received a Debit Card PIN with your welcome kit, you may have to enter that PIN to verify your account.
SMS Banking
You can send a request to set your Debit Card PIN via the bank’s SMS Banking facility. This process involves sending an SMS to the bank in a specific format.
Resetting Your Debit Card PIN
Whether you’ve forgotten your Debit Card PIN or simply wish to change it for security reasons, you can do so via online banking channels or visiting the ATM.
Via Online Banking Channels
You can reset your Debit Card PIN by selecting the ‘Forgot Debit Card PIN’ or similar option at the time of online payments. You will most likely be redirected to your bank’s NetBanking portal where you can reset the card PIN. Alternatively, you can log into your NetBanking portal or Mobile Banking app and under ‘Debit Cards’, select the option for PIN regeneration.Via ATM
On the ATM screen, select the ‘Forgot PIN’ or ‘Regenerate PIN’ or relevant option after inserting the Debit Card in the ATM slot. Enter the registered mobile number > enter the OTP > enter the new PIN > confirm.Via Bank Branch
You can visit the bank branch and fill out a PIN regeneration form. The new PIN will either be sent to your mailing address, or you can collect it from the branch.
Debit Card PIN vs CVV
While your Debit Card PIN remains confidential, you will find a three-digit number printed on the back of the Debit Card. This number is known as Card Verification Value (CVV). CVV ensures that the cardholder is physically present during an online transaction. While using your Card at a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal, you only need to enter the Debit Card PIN.
