Obtaining a two-wheeler licence is essential for anyone planning to ride a bike or scooter on Indian roads. With the increasing number of vehicles nationwide, having a valid licence ensures you can ride legally and safely. This blog will guide you through the various aspects of getting a two-wheeler driving licence in India, from the types of licences available to the eligibility criteria, application processes, required documents and fees involved.
The Different Types of Two-Wheeler Licences
In India, the two-wheeler licence is generally categorised into two types:
Gearless Licence: This is for those who wish to ride vehicles without a gearbox, such as scooters and mopeds.
Geared Licence: This is for riders who intend to drive motorbikes equipped with a gearbox.
Understanding the type of two-wheeler driving licence you need is the first step in the application process. While each state has a specific set of rules, some are common.
Eligibility Criteria to Apply for a Two-Wheeler Driving Licence
Before applying for a two-wheeler licence, you must meet the criteria set by the Regional Transport Office (RTO):
Age: Applicants must be at least 16 years old for a gearless two-wheeler licence and 18 years old for a geared two-wheeler driving licence.
Learning Licence: A valid Learner’s Licence (LL) is required before you can apply for a permanent two-wheeler driving licence.
Knowledge of Traffic Rules: Applicants must have a basic understanding of traffic rules and regulations.
