1. Google Pay : What is Google Pay?
Google Pay India is a mobile payment service that can be used by users to make payments using Cards and UPI. For Cards, Google Pay uses a process called Tokenization to replace the sensitive card information with an alias called token that is then used for payment instead of the sensitive card information.
2. Google Pay : How do I use Google Pay?
Wake up & unlock your phone : Turn on your phone screen, and then unlock your phone. You do not need to open the Google Pay app.
All you need to do is Tap your phone in the same way as you would tap your physical card at the terminal.
Please make sure that NFC is turned on in phone settings.
Incase you have multiple cards added to your account and wish to change your default card settings you can do so through Google settings on your device (Not Google pay settings)
Pay at any store that has a tap & pay enabled terminal. You should look out for terminals with the below contactless symbol or ask at the store
3. Google Pay : How does Google Pay work?
Google Pay uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to process payments at Contactless/NFC terminals. It also works with almost all magnetic strip terminals as it uses proprietary magnetic secure transmission (MST) when the phone is held against the terminal. The phone emits a magnetic signal that emulates the magnetic strip found on the back of a credit or debit card.
4. How can I create Google Pay account?
- Download Google Pay on phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
- Enter your phone number.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Follow the instructions to secure your Google Pay app and add a Card/Bank account.
5. Google Pay : How secure is Google Pay?
Google Pay protects your card payment info with multiple layers of security using one of the world’s most advanced security techniques.
We use a process called Tokenization to replace sensitive card information with an alias called a token. This ensures that your sensitive card information such as the 16 digit card number and CVV are never shared with anyone, including other apps and sites.
6. Google Pay - Can I download Google Pay App?
Yes, you can download the Google Pay India app from the Google Play Store.
7. Google Pay : What devices are compatible with Google Pay?
All devices with Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
8. Which mobile number should I use for Google Pay registration?
You can use any mobile number of your choice for Registration on Google Pay as long as you have access to the mobile number registered with bank. The OTP to complete the registration will be delivered to this mobile number. However please do note that in order to Add a payment method on Google Pay below are required :
In order to add a card on Google Pay please ensure you have access to the mobile number registered with your bank as you would receive an OTP on that number
In order to add a bank account on Google Pay via UPI please ensure that you have registered on Google pay using the phone number linked to your account and that the SIM for the same is on the device you are using
9. How to Add Cards to Google Pay?
On your mobile device, open Google Pay
- Tap Profile Payment methods Add card.
- Enter the card number, expiry date, CVV, and the cardholder’s name and billing address.
- Tap Save
- Accept issuer Terms & conditions
- We will contact your bank to verify your card
- Choose how you will verify
- You will be asked for additional authentication via OTP
- OTP will be auto read or you can enter it manually
- After your card is verified, you’re ready to use it for transactions.
Important:
You should receive this OTP via text message to the phone number/ email associated to your Card. If you don’t receive a one-time password, verify that your contact information is up to date with your bank.
Please note that Adding your card to Google Pay will register your card for Tokenized card payments for all the below use cases :
- Tap & Pay at NFC enabled terminals
- Mobile Recharges on Google pay and Online payments on 3rd party merchants where Google pay is supported
10. How to remove Cards from Google Pay?
On your mobile device, open Google Pay
Tap Settings Payment methods.
Tap the card that you want to remove Remove card.
Please note that removing your Card from Google Pay will automatically disable all forms of tokenized card payments for you.
You can also call your issuer to de-register your card post card addition
11. Google Pay : If I reset my phone, what happens to my Google Pay account?
Formatting or resetting your device will remove all payment Cards registered to your device.
12. Google Pay : What should I do if my device is lost or stolen?
You can open your Android Device Manager from here and Lock your device from the Secure Device option in the menu. This will deactivate all your card tokens
You can also choose to Wipe out the device in which case we will remove the tokens completely from the device instead of de-activating them
You also have an option to call your issuer to de-register your Card tokens on Google Pay
13. Google Pay : How can I cancel or dispute a payment made by Google Pay?
Canceling or disputing a payment made with Google Pay is exactly the same process as with a physical card. Pls click on link below to download the cardholder dispute form. Kindly fill in the form with appropriate details and send it to the email mentioned in the form.

14. Google Pay - Can I use Google Pay at an ATM?
Currently Google Pay will not work at ATMs in India.
15. Google Pay : Can I use Google Pay in foreign countries?
If your physical Credit or Debit Card is enabled for international payments, you should be able to use Google Pay to make your payment in countries where Google Pay is launched.
16. Google Pay : Why the card image in Google Pay is different my physical card?
There is no problem if the card displayed in Google Pay differs slightly from the physical card. The key points to look for are:
- The card issuer (HDFC Bank)
- The card network (Visa / Master)
- The last four digits of the physical card
17. Google Pay : Will my card work if I delete or remove the card from Google Pay?
Yes your plastic card will continue to work at POS terminal and ecomm txn
18. Google Pay : I am unable to register my Diners Card on Google Pay.
Tokenization is currently not available on Diners card. It is available only on Visa and MasterCard Cards.
19. Google Pay : How many cards can I register with Google Pay?
You can register upto 10 payment cards on Google Pay - these can either be debit or credit cards.
20. Google Pay : Does Google Pay store my personal information?
Google does not store your personal or payment information on a Google server or the device. Google Pay does not change the way your payment information is stored or handled when you make purchases. Your payment information will continue to be
managed by your card network and card issuer. Only a device-specific token, which is used to replace your sensitive payment information, is stored on the device.
21. Google Pay : How is my default payment card in Google Pay determined?
Incase you have multiple cards added to your account and wish to change your default card settings you can do so through Google settings on your device (Not Google pay settings)
22. Google Pay : How long will it take for my card to activate on Google Pay?
The average amount of time between the request for activation on Google Pay and subsequent approval will be within minutes, but can take up to 10 minutes after any additional verification requirements have been met. If this amount of time has been exceeded, remove the card from Google Pay and register it again. Contact Customer Care for assistance if you continue to encounter delays.
23. Google Pay : How do I contact Google Pay Customer Care?
If you have questions about your Google device or Google Pay, call 24*7 Google Pay Customer care Center .
24. Is there customer fee or service charge to use Google Pay?
No, Customer will not be charged for any transaction made on Google Pay platform using HDFC bank credit or debit cards
25. How can I set transaction limits for my Card transactions ?
You can visit Mycards or netbanking to set and modify per transaction and daily transaction limits for your card transactions. The same limits will be applicable for tokenized transaction.
26. Where Can I see the Google Pay card purchases made with my phone?
For online transactions :
You can view your transaction history in the All transactions section on Google Pay
You can also view the transactions in your conversation section with the individual merchants
Your Tap & Pay transactions will not be visible in the Google Pay app and you can view them in the cards section on your issuer netbanking portal
27. Will my Card work on Google Pay if my physical Card is closed or blocked?
No if your physical card is blocked then even your tokenized card on Google Pay will not work
28. What if my Card is suspended or expired ?
You will not be able to add your card to Google Pay if your card is suspended or expired
If your added card on Google Pay gets suspended or expired then they do not show up in the payment methods screen on Google Pay
29. Can I enroll the same Card on more than one device using Google Pay?
Yes, you can register the same Card in multiple devices. Please note that even if you register your Card on more than one device, any SMS communications about your Google Pay account will still be sent only to the registered mobile phone number with bank
30. I do not have a contactless card. Can I add my card to Google Pay and do Tap & Pay/ contactless in-store transactions
Yes. You can absolutely enjoy the contactless experience in Google Pay, even if your physical card is not contactless. All you need to do is have an NFC enabled phone and turn on NFC in settings and add your card to Google Pay
31. What is the permitted limit for Tap & Pay OR Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions?
The Permissible limit for Tap & Pay transactions in India is INR 5000. You can use Google Pay to transact only upto INR 5000 at merchant terminals. Your card PIN will not be required for these transactions.
