Will a weaver’s dream change a village?

Jigmet Chuskit

The Beginning

As a young woman from Mudh village in Changthang, Ladakh, I faced numerous challenges due to my early marriage and demanding work as a labourer. Despite these hardships, I held on to a deep passion for traditional weaving, dreaming of one day turning it into a livelihood.

The Challenge

My journey was full of obstacles. Limited access to resources and training made it difficult to transform my weaving skills into a stable income. Balancing household responsibilities with the demands of manual labour left me with little time to pursue my craft, and the path forward often seemed unclear.

The Partnership of Success

In 2020, a pivotal moment arrived. I joined a training program organised by Himmotthan Society in collaboration with HDFC Bank Parivartan. This opportunity unlocked my potential, allowing me to hone my weaving skills and empowering me to become a master trainer. As the president of a Self-Help Group called Junu Lakzos Tsogspa, I transformed my own life and inspired nine other women in my village. Together, we built a supportive community, sharing knowledge and skills to uplift each other.

Today, my journey from a low-paying labourer to a skilled master weaver has led me to earn a respectable Rs. 24,000 per month, enabling me to support my family and contribute to the community.

“My journey from labourer to a skilled weaver proves that passion, perseverance, and community can transform lives and revive traditions."
